Education Abroad Scholarship Common Application

Thanks to the generosity of several institutional, organizational, and individual donors, CSU's Office of International Programs (OIP) is able to facilitate the awarding of several scholarships through a common application. In 2016-17, CSU students received over $450,000 in additional education abroad scholarships from CSU and affiliated program providers, as well as national and private organizations. OIP-Education Abroad hopes to see those amounts grow each year to promote all types of education abroad to a more diverse group of students.

This application will serve as a common application for ALL education abroad scholarships listed in the Program Search for Scholarships as long as students have the qualifying requirements and have applied for a program of study, field work, internship or research.

Applicants will be considered for all scholarships for which they are qualified. Visit the different scholarships' pages to read more about the requirements for each scholarship.  All applications will consist of 3 short essay questions. Some scholarships may require an additional essay, which again will be noted on the individual page.

No late applications will be accepted.

General Criteria for All Scholarships

Applications will be accepted from students enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program at CSU. Applicants must be in good disciplinary standing at the time of application and maintain good standing to receive award money. In the event the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of awards available, the scholarship committee may rank applications based on the following selection criteria:

  • financial need and diverse background of the applicant
  • the quality of the applicant's response to the essay questions
  • the applicant's cumulative grade point average
  • the country of destination -- preference will be given to students studying in non-traditional destination
  • the applicant's major -- preference will be given to the students majoring in underrepresented fields in study abroad
  • the length of the applicant's study abroad program

Scholarship applications are reviewed by a scholarship committee comprised of CSU faculty and/or staff after the posted deadline. Awards will be distributed in a variety of ways (through CSU's RamWeb system, through College or departmental  accounts, through program provider invoices, etc.).

Advice for Essays

Your essay is read by multiple readers who rate each essay independently. Each student's essay is assigned a score by a reader, and the readers' scores are averaged together for an overall essay score per student. Each essay should be around 300 words.

Essay: Please address these three topics, allocating one paragraph per topic:

  • How will the education abroad opportunity directly contribute to your studies at CSU and your goals for the future?
  • Briefly describe your academic, extracurricular, and personal accomplishments that demonstrate your achievements.
  • What challenges do you face (personal, academic, financial, or other) that affect your ability to participate in education abroad?

Strong essays will be clearly articulated and organized with no errors for spelling, punctuation, or grammar. Your essay should be clearly written with a persuasive explanation of your strengths and needs. It should be individualized, focused, and purposeful, and should reflect your understanding of and desire for participation in education abroad.
