Program Description:

Mona Mitchell Education Abroad Scholarship for Students with Disabilities

Mona Mitchell dedicated her career as an Occupational Therapist to help youth make the most of their academic and personal experiences by maximizing their abilities. Mona's husband and professional engineer, Bruce Mitchell, also helped by creating Occupational Therapy adaptive devices, which helped make some challenges easier to navigate.  The Mitchell's believe that an education abroad is an important learning experience and want to help make the opportunity more accessible to students with disabilities.


Range from $250 to $3000 for summer, semester or year education abroad on any program offered through the Office of International Programs (OIP).  Scholarships will be awarded through RamWeb at the same time as other CSU financial aid disbursements.

Eligibility requirements

Participation in any OIP promoted Education Abroad program; a documented cognitive, neurological, or physical disability; financial need will be considered, and applicants are asked to articulate their need in the scholarship essay questions.

General Criteria for All Scholarships

Applications will be accepted from undergraduate students enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program at Colorado State University. Applicants must be in good disciplinary standing at the time of application and maintain good standing to receive award money. In the event the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of awards available, the scholarship committee will rate applications based on the following selection criteria:

  • financial need and diverse background of the applicant
  • the quality of the applicant's response to the essay questions
  • the applicant's cumulative grade point average
  • the country of destination -- preference will be given to students studying in non-traditional destination
  • the applicant's major -- preference will be given to the students majoring in underrepresented fields in study abroad
  • the length of the applicant's study abroad program

Scholarship applications are reviewed by a scholarship committee comprised of CSU faculty and/or staff after the posted deadline.

This is a streamlined application--you may apply to multiple education abroad scholarships through one application submission. Please note that you must apply and be accepted to a abroad abroad through OIP in order to receive the Mitchell scholarship.
