Program Description:

PURPAN Agriculture and Food Science Semester Exchange
in Toulouse, France

This academic, multicultural exchange program offers students a unique opportunity to study European culture, agriculture, and
food and wine production. The program is ideal for CSU students with interests in crop and animal production,food processing,
viticulture, enology, fermentation science, cheese making, agro-tourism and related activities such as restaurant and resort management. 
The fall program will be led by a CSU faculty member from the College of Agricultural Sciences to enrich the academic experience. 

General Program Information

WHEN:  Students may participate in the program for a full academic year, fall semester, spring semester, or during the summer. 
 Fall:  August-December (Consider participating in the summer program with internship before this program!)
 Spring:  January-May

WHERE:  Toulouse, France

HOST INSTITUTIONÉcole d'Ingénieurs de PURPAN is one of the prestigious specialized schools of France, called the grandes écoles. It is one of seven such schools comprising the Institut National Polytechnic de Toulouse.  The curriculum focuses on life sciences, agriculture, food science, marketing, management, and international experiences. 

CREDITS:  Two European Credit and Transfer System (ECTS) credits are equal one CSU credit.  Typically, CSU students can earn over 12 credits during a semester at PURPAN and 6 for the summer program (or up to 9.5 credits in summer with the 2 month internship).

COST:  Please see relevant budget sheet for FALL or SPRING. Please note that non-resident students will pay a more affordable direct enrollment cost instead of CSU tuition.  Students should complete the Education Abroad Common Scholarship Application as Purpan applicants are eligible for scholarships.

NOTE:  There are 2 x $1500 scholarships available for study at PURPAN!  Students should apply through the Education Abroad Common Scholarship Application.

LANGUAGE:  Courses are taught in English.  The curriculum includes a conversational French language course.  French language classes are available at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels.  For advanced French speakers, it is possible to take classes in French that focus on European agronomy. 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:  Minimum GPA 2.8, Good Disciplinary Standing

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: This exchange program allows CSU students to study from the many Agricultural Science and Business courses at PURPAN for one or two semesters or during the special summer program which includes an internship.  During the fall semester, a CSU faculty member will lead a group of CSU students at PURPAN in order to expand the curriculum and enrich the experience.  Students should consider attending the summer program with an internship at PURPAN before their fall semester to earn nearly 24 credits and spend over 6 months in France!


SEMESTER PROGRAM:  Semester courses focus on such topics as agronomic and food-processing sciences, viticulture, enology, fermentation science, economics, business administration, marketing, management, environmental science, biodiversity, and additional social sciences. Students can follow academic studies with an internship.

Summer Study Abroad Program: French & European Agriculture


Participants live in self-catered apartment-style housing or residence halls. Estimated costs are 700-800 Euro per month inclusive of accommodations, food, transportation, and personal costs.


Toulouse, located in the southwestern France, is the country's fourth largest city.  Surrounded by beautiful rolling agricultural land near the foot of the Pyrenees, it is well known for its cultural heritage, stunning buildings made of pink stone, excellent gastronomy, and strong agricultural tradition.  There are many universities in Toulouse and the student population is 110,000 making for a vibrant community of young people.
